Traffic in Billund in April
Traffic in April was affected by the fact that it was Easter in April this year, while Easter fell in March last year.
At the coming into force of the Summer timetable on March 26 a considerable change has taken place in the traffic pattern in Billund.
As from this day Sterling Airlines stopped the co-operation with international airline companies, which for at number of years has been the cornerstone in Maersk Air’s building up scheduled international traffic from Billund. This co-operation has made it possible to reach most of the world from Billund with just one stop and on one ticket.
But neither Billund Airport nor its many route passengers need despair. Substitution has been found and more is to come.
KLM is now flying 3 times a day from Billund to Amsterdam. Lufthansa partner Cirrus Airlines flies 3 times a day between Billund and Frankfurt, and Cimber flies twice a day between Billund and Munich.
At the same time Sterling continues its scheduled international flights on a number of important destinations: London, Paris, Malaga, Alicante, Mallorca and Rome/Athens have been added with success.
But it is no secret that there have been difficulties in finding seats on the flights in April and that this will continue throughout Summer. The reason is that the capacity to e.g. Amsterdam and Frankfurt without a doubt has been too small. We therefore welcome KLM’s promise that the capacity to Amsterdam will be increased as from the Winter timetable in November. Hereafter there will be 4 daily round trips Billund-Amsterdam.
Cimber opens its new route from Billund to Bergen today.
The decrease in the number of domestic passengers is due to the fact that Sterling on March 25 stopped operating the service from Aalborg to Billund. SUN-AIR took over and operated the service in April but without any chance of success, because the other companies have not been interested in this service and because SUN-AIR’s own routes from Billund do not really have the number of extra seats which would make it interesting for them to operate the Aalborg-route. Therefore SUN-AIR stops on the Aalborg route to Billund in the middle of May.
Charter went up by 9.6 % in April. Everything indicates that also Summer 2006 will be a good Summer for the charter trade.
Apart from the decrease in the number of passengers on the international routes, there were other negative aspects in April. Serving new, large customers has meant new technical equipment, which Billund has not had the optimum experience in operating. This has now and then caused delays. In co-operation with the airline companies we do everything we humanly and technically can to leave these problems behind us.
In connection with this we kindly ask all passengers, who are travelling with KLM to USA, to fill in the form concerning permanent address, temporary address in America etc. prior to travelling. This information is for the American authorities and absolute necessary in order to get entry permit to USA. The form can be found at www.bll.dk . With this information ready to present at the desk, check-in to USA will be quick.
April’s key figures are:
Domestic - 30.1 %, due to the fact that traffic between Aalborg and Billund went down by more than 3,000 passengers
Scheduled international - 8.2 %
Charter + 9.6 %
Passengers total - 3.5 %
Cargo -11.2 %, due to Easter in April
